What season? Hunting season of course! That’s right, I am a hunter / gatherer. I like to eat a lot of fresh meat in the fall, wild plants (ramps) in the spring, nuts and berries in the late summer. Ah yes, living in West Virginia certainly has it perks.
A very generous hunting season is what I consider to be one of those perks. We have a lot of large and small game in this great state. Everything from the 300 pound Black Bear to 1/2 pound Ruffed Grouse. I thoroughly enjoy my time spent in the woods and becoming one with nature.
Bow hunting season (for Deer) begins on October 18th this year, and I can hardly contain myself. I used to bowhunt religiously, but I stopped somewhere in the early 2000’s. I have wanted to get back into it ever since, and this is the first year that I get to do that. Excited would be an understatement. Last time I felt like this I had to have multiple acne treatments.
So, if you don’t want to see photos of me posing with a dead bambi, you should probably watch what you read around here in the coming weeks. (Then again, I may not post them…I am undecided at this point.)
What do you guys think? Should I post pictures of me with dead deer, or should I leave that to your imaginations?
I just hope you have better luck hunting than you did the last time you went with me.
Do you remember that day?
If I recall correctly, it started raining about ten minutes after we got into our treestands in the morning. Then we decided to go to Hico for some reason, and we almost died in a freak hydroplaining accident. Later in the evening it stopped raining so we went back to the treestands, just in time for it start raining again. All my spare clothes got wet because I forgot to park my truck uphill (this was a $500 truck and the back window leaked if you parked downhill in a rainstorm). Finally, we decided to go home, but it was so damn foggy on the way back to your house that was impossible to tell where the road was, or if it you we were going to hit another car.
Come to think of it, this is pretty much how every venture you and I have partaken in turned out.

Why don’t you just regale us with stories instead of pics? I see plenty of dead deer hanging out the back of trucks around here. Of course, it’s your blog, so you can do whatever you like. I’ll still visit – even if I have to read thru slits in my fingers.

Even though I enjoy hunting, I too despise the degenerates who feel the need to affirm their masculinity by driving around with a dead critter strapped to the top of their car or hanging off their tailgate.
I once come within inches of getting into a fist fight with one of my wife’s family members because he spent an hour trying to tie a deer to the tailgate of his truck in the middle of blizzard.
The idiots who behave like this are typically the same guys who have trucks with twelve inch lift kits and thirty seven inch tires, even though would never dream of taking their trucks off-road. When we lived in WV, my wife called this the little thingy complex.
I KNEW IT!!!! Even before reading your post I knew what the subject was going to be because thats the same way I feel. It is so hard to express just how exciting the whole process is, from start to finish…even if you didn’t get to pull the string/trigger. Just getting ready and then being in your stand….waiting and watching. Nothing like it in the world. If you do get one, please post your pics. I won’t have to cover my eyes 😉 Hehe…j/k ETW 😉
Garrick – Oh yes, I remember. How could I forget something like that? It wouldn’t have been quite as bad if we could have built a fire in the old house, but seeing as we didn’t have any firewood, that was pretty much impossible.

in bad situations(when it comes to life to self protect) i can kill a human being but not a animal ,, i hate hunting and hunters,,, they can’t speak and react otherwise humans would have not survived till now.. whatever a good blog…please post some good posts even though it is yours blog and it is upto you to what to pos
My friends are avid archers, but they’ve never actually gone hunting themselves. They’re seriously considering it though, and are taking some training classes for them now. Always nice to have some fresh meat in the winter.
